International Fiber Consultants Newsletter The Returns Are In $$
As you know IFC has always projected that as a result of improving chip quality there would be a reduction in raw material consumption,or an increase in brown stock yield from the digester. In addition we have predicted that Kappa number variation would be reduced, strength would increase and that chemical consumption would go down. Although most of the projections were a result of mill trials, some of the projections were an extrapolation of the results of the nine complete pulping studies in which IFC has been involved. The client we are reporting on this quarter is about 90% complete with implementation, and are finding the results of the process nothing short of astonishing. They are reporting >10% reduction in raw material consumption, which exceeds the original IFC projections. They are also reporting that their viscosity has more than doubled, and Kappa number variation has been reduced by a factor of two. In addition they are reporting reductions in bleach plant chemical consumption. The pulp mill superintendent has stated that "our mill is now a truly world class mill, in all respects." Chip quality improvements were made in the mill wood yard, in outside chip mills and in sawmills supplying residual chips to the mill. The process from start-up, to 90% implementation, has required about six months. The results are a consequence of a concerted effort by the client to capture all of the opportunity available to them, and in the shortest time possible, maximizing their return. IFC would like to congratulate this client on a job very well done. The Process of Continuous Growth and Learning IFC, over the course of working with more than thirty clients, continues to refine our recommended approach to improving chip quality. Most of the original principles, and methods are still in place, but they have become refined, as we have learned more.We continue to hold steadfast to the need to get a chip sample which is representative of the source of chip manufacture. We will not make recommendations for chip quality improvement without this in place. We have learned that for the process to work well that the project can not be broken into two phases. The results from those clients who have opted to do the work in two phases have, in general, been disappointing. On the other hand those clients who have opted to complete the project in one phase are achieving phenomenal results. IFC recognizes the difficulty in getting funding for a complete project. As a result we now offer our clients several options, which should assist them in funding their project. We are confident that we can find an option which will satisfy your situation.
